The New York City Council is the legislative branch of city government which is made up of 51 Council Members elected from 51 Council Districts in New Yorks five boroughs.

Philip Reed entered the city council in January 1998. Council-member Reed was born in New York City and raised on the upper West Side of Harlem. Council-member Reed's parents encouraged him to become involved in politics and taught him to stand up for what he beleived , an ideal that has dominated his life.

Council-member Reed began his fight against injustic by organizing, youth boycotts, and protests with Dr. Martin Luther King.

Councilmember Reed was involved in Democratic party politics which led him to serve three terms as a Democratic District Leader. He continues to volunteer his time tutoring children after school through the Children's Aid Society.In 1995, he also became Director for Public Affairs for the Hetrick-Martin Institute. The Hetrick-Martin Institute fights against discrimination, and to provide educational counseling for gay and lesbian youth.

Phillip Reed was elected to the New York City Council in November 1997 and began serving his first term on January 1, 1998 . His juridiction covers the Upper West Side,East Side,and part of Mott Haven. As a council-man Reed serves on the governmental Operations,Health,Parks and cultural Affairs.

His responsiblity is to make sure the people living in the neighborhood he is council-man for live in a safe , positive environment. For instant , if the garbage needs to be picked up around your neighborhood , his responsiblity is to bring your problems to the attention of people in power who can try to make a changes .This will better the community. His office is open to all questions and comments.

Phillip Reed is a very open compassionate man who really cares and enjoys what he does. We as a community have a voice, which should be heard.

If a person has something to say, Phillip Reed is there to hear it.
