Maury Show
By:Iyana Garry

Every weekday, at 10am and 12pm, we are entertained by the fouls of our African American family structure. We see Black men disown their children and Black women trap men with their children. This is why there are so many Black kids out here making nothing out of their lives; they’re looking for family and belonging, things they are missing at home.

“You ARE the father!” “You are NOT the father!” Either result, you hear an uproar from the audience. Whether the mother of illegitimate child runs backstage with her sobbing act or she flaunts in front of the father that he was wrong about the paternity, I feel despite its entertainment status, it’s all a mockery of the Black family and it is a disgrace.

These potential fathers of the children make themselves look like fools. You call the mothers bitches, whores, every insulting name you can call a woman. It’s not only respectful to the women you’re name-calling, but also disrespectful to yourself, your mother, sister, and every other female that you care about. You say you’re 100% sure you’re not the father. Who cares?! This is why the audience boos you to your seat. Regardless of the paternity, you should still take responsibility of these kids. Children hold our future, and the number of parents in a household make a paramount difference in a child’s life. A father’s leadership in a son’s life could possibly keep him from repeating the cycle of a deadbeat father and becoming one of America’s Most Wanted, and could possibly keep a daughter from selling her body and “swinging on the pole”.

However, the potential are not the only ones making fools out of themselves. First, Maury gives the audience the impression that these mothers are wholesome angels who were wronged by their children’s father. The mothers encourage this idea by trashing the father and saying evil things that the fathers did to them or their children. “Oh, look at his eyes, his nose, his hairline, his ears! My baby looks just like him!” The child could look like the man spit him out, facial features do not always guarantee that the man is the child’s father. “I am 1,000% sure that he is the father!” No, you’re not! If you were so sure, you wouldn’t even be on the show. If you know for sure that the man you claim is the father, you don’t need to prove it to him. Just take him to court and get your child support. When the man comes out, the audience boos him to his seat without caring for anything the man said on the screen, which is just as trashy as the mother’s accusations. If it turns out that the man is the father, good for you. Otherwise, then congratulations, you just made an ass out of yourself and your kids. The audience starts cheering for the man and they see you as a trifling slut. Maybe if you closed your legs long enough, then you would actually be 1,000% sure.

Then, there are some cases where the potential father’s mother or significant other put themselves into the picture, who are usually the ones who convince these potentials that they’re not the father. Despite your jealousy or whatever reason you have for becoming a home wrecker, Whatever relationship a father has with his child has nothing to do with you, so the best thing you can do is stay out of it.
In conclusion, The Maury Show is a circus on TV. It’s real, but it’s made to entertain. It’s fun to watch, but should be canceled. Something as serious as the Black family structure should not be made out of some lunatic reality show.
