The Media's Ticket To
Getting Attention

by Kelly Koblacki

It's pretty obvious how the media thinks sex, babies and cute animals will grab the public eyeŠbut does it really sell a product to have a half naked lady holding a can of beer that she probably never even drank before? Or a cute cuddly puppy advertising pet food? Or a baby wearing a certain brand of diapers? Who's to say that the product is even good? Sadly enough, this method of selling products is quite effective. Whatever happened to simply explaining the products good qualities?

Don't get me wrong, I like looking at a half naked woman just as much as the next guy or a cute pup, or baby for that matter, but that still doesn't assure the quality of the merchandise. Now wouldn't it make you feel a little stupid if you bought cologne because some sexy woman in the commercial was saying that if she smelled a guy wearing it she'd fall in love with him (or something to that effect) and you but it and it smells like crap? Or if you buy your pet a certain kind of pet food because the commercial was so convincing that the food would be good for the pet and then you're puppy or kitty or whatever doesn't like it and won't eat it?

In my opinion, commercials are a very good way of advertising something and also a good form of amusement (assuming the commercial is amusing because we all know that there are some commercials that we just can't help but flipping the channel) however, you shouldn't let the advertiser take over your personal opinion of the product itself. You should buy things simply from personal experience of using the product before or if you want to be daring to try something new. It's pointless to spend your hard earned money or your parents money (whichever the case may be) on something a cute girl said to buy orŠwell, you get the point.

It just bothers me how the media knows how to manipulate innocent buyers into buying whatever it is that they want to sell by using those three subjects (sex, babies and animals). So in conclusion, do us both a favor and don't let the media take over your personal judgement.
