Calderon
was born in Loiza, Puerto Rico in 1972 but raised in Carolina
and Miami, Florida. Raised in a place that always played music
and Ismael Rivera, Tego says that “Maelo” was
a great influence on his music. His mother was a school teacher
who taught him the two different languages Spanish and English.
His father worked in the government and tought him the true
meanings of salsa and jazz music.
With the support of his family it helped him in his music
and the struggles he went through. Often he would work at
low jobs until he was recognized for his talent. With his
musical interest he developed a unique style for rappers.
Mixing his rhymes with the rhymes of Puerto Rico together
with salsa and reggae styles made his music.
Tego released his album: El Abayarde in 2002 on the
White Lion label. The album, which includes the song El Abayarde
was immediately liked in Puerto Rico. It was bought by both
young and old. The album selling almost a quarter million
copies and playing all over Spanish radio stations.
When returning back to Miami, Tego was a big hit on the 2003
Billboard Latin Music Conference with great performance that
showed his rhythm and native influences. Tego was also a surprise
at the 2003 celebration of the “Dia Nacional de la Salsa”
when salsa artist Tommy Olivencia, broght him on stage. When
Tego sang he got a standing ovation.
Tego’s latest album, El Enemy De Los Guasibiri was released
in January, 2004 on the BMG label. The album has 17 songs
which include some songs written by Luny Tunes and the song
“No Sufracas Por Ella”, featuring Tono Rosario.
