Antwone Fisher--Fishing for Tears
by Ismael Alvarez and Shem Rajoon

Beautifully made and heart touching, is the Antwone Fisher story. Denzel Washington directed a masterpiece in his directorial debut. The movie is based on a true story about a troubled, sometimes violent, young navy man who comes face to face with the terrible, horrifying, trauma of his childhood. A screen newcomer, Derek Luke, plays Fisher, a violent navy man who deals with the pain of his childhood as an abused foster child. Model Joy Bryant who was featured in the Eddie Murphy comedy Show time, played the gentle, supportive girlfriend Cheryl.

Antwone’s childhood experiences may put you to tears. However, in the next few moments you will be left rejoicing because of how he overcame his struggle, more so because of the odds Fisher overcame. The Antwone Fisher story will inspire you, it certainly inspired me. It conveys a message that no matter what you been through, no matter the odds, no matter how many people you have against you, you can still come out on top and be victorious.
“Antwone Fisher” is based on a true story that is uplifting; it makes you want to reach out and touch somebody. Personally, one of the most touching movies I’ve ever seen, “Antwone Fisher” explores the many depths of a young man who was been through it all. From being tied down to a pole and beaten, raped, even terrorized, Fisher still managed to triumph and over come all the f*cked up shit he’s been through in his childhood. Before I saw the movie, I didn’t realize how much my family meant to me. We as imperfect humans tend to forget the impact our family has on our lives. Fisher made it through his childhood with an image of a mother, but never getting a chance to know one. He survived on the basis that by just holding on a little longer, he’ll make it through everything.

Simply put, “Antwone Fisher” is a must see movie. If you’re into true stories that touches your heart and make you burst out in tears, go see this movie. “Antwone Fisher” helps us to appreciate our lives and our families while the story also gives us hope and makes us treasure those who inspire us.
“Training Day’s” Best Actor Academy Award winning Denzel Washington is the military psychiatrist who slowly breaks down Fishers past to help him get through life without the pain holding him down. The movie takes place around San Diego, a city with many military bases, and Fishers hometown Cleveland. The Antwone Fisher movie is a movie that brings out raw emotions that are usually lost in a person. It showed clips of him as a child and the things he went through, the way he got beat and mistreated. Then it shows how Fisher gets over his struggle with the past, with his girlfriend there to comfort him. It makes you feel his hurt and pain, his hate and love, his struggle. “Antwone Fisher” explores the boundaries of thousands of foster care children who are still fighting for a stable and loving family in their lives. “It (Fisher’s Story) touches on issues that have sort of been kept quiet, stayed within the home. That’s one of the reasons why Antwone wanted his story told, to speak out to all those others who might be in hiding, or are struggling with it, that they also can survive.” – Denzel Washington
