Metroid: Zero Mission-worth
way more than Zero

by Tyrell Carlton

Samus is back in the remake of the 1986 classic Metroid, which debuted on the NES, and now has been released on the Game Boy Advance. This is the game dreams are
made of! The graphic have greatly improved on the GBA, compared to the original. The details on monsters and on Samus herself have been improved thanks to the GBA’s
graphics engine. The backgrounds of the game have gone through an over haul than that of the black backgrounds of the original, such as crumbling ledges and detailed statues. The colors have been improved, such as Samus's power suit to Ridley's scaly hide.
The Godzila reject, Kraid, is
back and fatter than ever.
Metroid the story starts as Samus, an intergalactic bounty hunter, is sent to the planet Zebes to stop the space pirates from capturing the Metroid, a life draining life form that can multiply rapidly. With this organism, the space pirates can take over the universe. The controls are tight and pretty much the same as the controls from Metroid Fusion (such as the left button points the arm cannon in diagonal directions, right is missile launcher, etc). The monsters have the same moves of the original game (such as the spike monsters and the space pirates) and added a few more moves and powers ups to our favorite bounty hunter, such as the power grip and zip line (which isn’t much of a power up).The weapons which in clued the Missiles, Super Missiles, Bombs and Super bombs
are still included within it.
That's right, Samus is a girl.

Nintendo has also added a goodie bag of secrets. The big N has added cut scenes to flesh out the story, from the raised-by-bird-people past of Samus, to the arrival of Ridley on Planet Zebes. You can even play the original Metroid on the GBA, in all its glory. By using the link cable and two GBAs, you can gain access to a special gallery of Metroid drawings (through the Metroid; Fusion game pack of course.).Even with all these great features, there are some problems. Even with a multitude of
sub-bosses and included a final boss that is exclusive to this version of Metroid, the game is still a bit short. There is also a problem with the boss difficulty. Since when did
Ridley (the big dragon looking alien) was so easy? Thankfully, they ratified this by adding a hard mode after finishing the game.If they added more of a challenge and more unlockables like Metroid 2 and maybe some more cut scenes that made some sense (like telling us how a
70 ft tall fat lizard fit inside the planet!) in the story.
Other than these minor complaints, this is a great game and makes a welcome addition to your GBA library. 8.5/10
