Superman Returns

by Diamond Bradley

Ahhh, a breath of fresh air. "Superman Returns" was a
surprisingly good movie. My eyes weren't "glued" to the screen, but it kept me in tune overall. The acting, especially by one Kate Bosworth, who plays Lois Lane, the love interest of Superman, was exceptional. She reminded me of a young Meryl Streep, with her sass and demeanor through the film.

Kevin Spacey was himself as he once again displayed why he is one of Hollywood's best actors. I rarely use this word, but he was perfect for the role of the villainous Lex Luthor. Unlike the known, Smallville version, he showed his true dislike for "The Man Of Steel." Much more aggressive and assertive to his main goal of controlling the world.
While he masterfully crossed the scriptwriter's lines between stern and humorous, I had no choice but to love every scene I saw his bald head
in. Brandon Routh. If he was the only guy they could take, they made the right choice. For his first film, his job as Superman was well done. If I was director Bryan Singer, I would go right back to him for a sequel.
The plot was understood clearly, as Superman returns to Earth from Krypton after discovering that scientists had found his home planet. He had to know for sure, so he left to find out. He comes back five years
later to find Lois Lane married with a child, and Lex Luthor desperate for world domination. This time, he chose to take over the world by using the crystals from the "Fortress Of Solitude" (This was where
Superman discovered who he was in the original Superman movie) and using them to create a brand new land mass in the Atlantic Ocean.

This would cause a flood in the U.S. and transform Lex into a superpower. The movie was enjoyable from beginning to end. It helps to know more about the history of the Superman character, but it definitely won't hurt if you know little about him. Bring a friend, bring a family, or bring the family. "Superman Returns" could have you returning to the theater to see it again.
