Austin Powers in Goldmember
by Kim Campbell

That sexy beast is at it again! Your favorite shagadelic international man of mystery is back in the new movie, Austin Powers in Goldmember. Austin Powers (Mike Myers) must once again stop his archenemy Dr. Evil from destroying the world.

Dr. Evil’s new plan involves the kidnapping of Austin’s father, Nigel Powers (Sir Michael Caine) with the help of a new accomplice, Goldmember. In an attempt to find both his father and Goldmember, Powers travels back in time to 1975 via his pimp mobile. There, he hooks up with an old work partner, the alluring Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles). Together they go to the year 2002 to rescue Austin’s father and sabotage Dr. Evil’s plan. While on their mission they meet some old characters such as Fat Bastard and Mini-me, but they also encounter new people such as the Mole (Fred Savage), and Goldmember. Austin Powers in Goldmember was a hilarious movie. It is a laugh out loud comedy that the general audience enjoys. The story line and plot is not very serious and has no profound messages to send to the public but that was deliberate. The film is not designed to make you think, it is only there to produce laughter and does an excellent job of doing so. Goldmember was a lot raunchier than the previous Austin Powers movies (The Spy who Shagged Me and Austin Powers International Man of Mystery). There were a lot more blatant references to sex related issues so it may be inappropriate for children under 14. Mike Myers once again does a phenomenal job of portraying several different characters. He plays Austin Powers, Fat Bastard, Dr. Evil and Goldmember so well that it is easy to forget that Myers is the person behind all of these characters.

Beyonce Knowles, a singer who is part of the R&B group Destiny’s Child, played the role of Foxxy Cleopatra. She did a good job of portraying Foxxy as a stylish and seductive 70’s chick but her acting skills were not up to par with others in the movie. Sir Michael Caine seemed ideal for the role as Austin’s father. He was suave and portraryed the character as Nigel Powers very well.

All in all, Goldmember did not fail us. This movie is extremely entertaining and is a great comedy. The characters’ personalities, the ridiculous plot, and the relentless jokes makes Goldmember a good remedy for boredom. If ever you find yourself with nothing to do or you just need a reason to laugh, take the time to see Goldmember and you will not be disappointed.
