"Duppy"

by Justin Young

"Duppy," a featured play produced by Think It's Not When It Iz, Inc., written by Ronne Haynie and directed by Sonya M. Hemphill, had its debut stage performance at the Theater of the Riverside Church in the valley of Harlem Thursday night. This drama set in present day Harlem presented its audience with the shameful, demeaning act of elderly abuse and the powerful nature of revenge.

The play "Duppy," first an award winning WBAI-99.5 FM radio drama, also delved into the constant epidemic of drug abuse and the divisiveness of cultural intraracism that plagues and torments our community. The story line delivered by a freshman cast is about senior citizen Al Carter who privately endures years of physical and mental abuse from his grandson Dwayne who eventually kills him. "Duppy" Al's vengeful spirit returns to haunt Dwayne inflicting the same abuse he gave his grandfather, confirming "what goes around comes around."

After seeing this play you will be enlightened about the hidden mistreatment of senior citizens by the hands of their own children.
