Never Compromise Your Goal

By: Yvonne Overby

The Broadway musical version of The Lion King has a character named Rafiki, played by Tsidii Le Loka, who was nominated for a Tony Award in this role.

Ms. LeLoka is a South African vocalist / songwriter who had an education at Berkeley College, The University of Massachusetts, and Amherst and has two Bachelors Degrees, in Economics and Music.

During my interview with Ms. Le Loka I asked her how has The Lion King changed her life? Ms. Le Loka replied that it made her realize she is a good actress and, it has allowed her to continue her work. Ms. Le Loka doesn't feel that she has made it to the top yet. Ms. Le Loka wants to portray the "truth" about the play's theme. Certain parts of The Lion King represent a small part of the African culture. Ms. Le Loka says that Africa is one big country, but has different cultures and languages.

I asked her what kind of visions she has for the African-American actors in the U.S. Ms. Le Loka replied that she thinks it's wonderful and exciting to be represented in the media. The African American actors are very focused in the acting business. Ms. Le Loka thinks acting in the U.S. it's like a new experience because she's learning something different from her background. Ms. Le Loka made a commitment to represent herself as a South African actress making it big in the U.S.

Ms. Le Loka loves playing the role of Rafiki; she has her mind on staying on as Rafiki for as long as she can.

On my last question I asked what kind of advice does she has for the kids who wants to go in the acting business. Ms. Le Loka replied, "Never compromise your goal." In my words, never take the easy road. Make sure you are committed to your work; prepare yourself to be in a lot of competition, and work hard to reach to the top.
