"Male writers seem to get more credit for their books than females writers do," said Julia White, an intern at the Bluestocking's Women's Bookstore. "So our bookstore is dedicated to female writers & books related to female and queer issues" Bluestocking's Women's Bookstore, on Allen St. and 2nd Ave. has been open for about 1 and 1/2 years. It's the only women's bookstore in Manhattan. It's a collectively run store, which means that there are only volunteers with the exception of one paid worker.
It's a cute little bookstore if I do say so myself. There's a café, stuff to buy and many things for women to get involved in such as: * W.A.R.R.I.O.R., which stands for, Women Against Rape Rising In Organized Rage, *Blue
Action Monthly which is a monthly meeting and "Women/girls are generally petty, jealous and competitive toward each other. Sometimes it's hard for girls to get along, but here we look beyond that and work together." Let's be serious now, some girls are (all of the above) and that's the reason why girls always get into stupid little fights, talk about each other, spread rumors etcŠ so I think it's great that there's a comfortable environment where we can go to get away from all that. You can read some books, drink some coffee, what more do you need? So ladies, stop going to Barnes and Noble and check out Bluestocking's Women's Bookstore. Oh, and by the way, guys are allowed in the store. Contact
