Rebuilding of Harlem, the 2nd Renaissance

staff writer

Evidence of Harlem's resurgence continues. Evidence is most noticeable at Harlem's doorstep...where Central Park, Malcolm X Blvd (aka Lenox Ave) and St Nicholas Avenue converge.

St Nicholas Ave. is like Harlem's Broadway, in that it cuts at a diagonal as it heads north. Long ago it was known as the Albany Post Road, taking folks all the way to New York State's capitol. At this intersection, a new plaza is under construction due to be completed in June, 2000. The small triangle, until recently nothing more than a concrete island, will be named Malcolm X Plaza.

Across the street, the Park View Hotel has opened.

Malcom X Blvd continues to be repaved with trees and benches lining and occupying a small traffic island.

At the northwest corner of the soon to be named Malcolm X Plaza, a building is being refurbished and the longtime residents will move back in. Throughout Harlem, long ago vacated buildings are being refurbished and occupied.

If you need any proof of the changes happening uptown, just take the 2 or 3 train to the 110th Street stop. The Second Harlem Renaissance is well underway.
