Early one beautiful Saturday, one you would expect everyone to be outside relaxing, people were on their way to an event to promote literacy. Where--in a place you would least expect it, Harlem. "Events like this show that we have other talents besides music and sports." says Gerren Liles a young author who also works as an elementary teacher. He went further to state "I want to help encourage literacy". The main intent of the people who were interviewed was to help promote literacy and also to sell their books. Many new authors had books out to entice the public to purchase them. Titles varied from "On the Road to Damascus" written by Gerren Liles to "When You Look At Me" by Undra E. Biggs. To get all these people out so early shows growing community awareness about the lack of literacy in the neighborhood. "Events like this get more people reading. It promotes literacy and multi-cultural awareness. This book fair is a great place for us to see literature that relates to us." said Dr. Brenda M. Greene. She was out to support the book fair and inform people of her program. She felt it was important to be at the book fair for networking and meeting new people. Undra E. Biggs was there to bring publicity to herself and her new book. "It shows that through reading you can learn more about life and our culture." she said. With the changes being made in the public school curriculums this event can help the younger members of our community because by promoting literacy children will be less intimidated by reading in school because their practicing it at home. |
