Three Perspectives of the MYM

Story by Damian Gaillardd

When I attended the Million Youth March I felt a lot of love between my brothers and sisters, but at the same time I also felt that many of the people there did not feel safe and were a little scared even with the presence of the "N.Y.P.D."(New York Police Department).

There was a moment in the gathering when a helicopter flew down over our heads. Instead of acting like we never saw machinery, my people and I raised our fist in the air to show that we came in PEACE. They could not make us fight each other, but we will fight for one another. I wondered how the other people felt about what happened at the march. So I asked Mr. Muhammad, two police officers, and a member of the Five Percent (5%) nation how they felt.

Brief Interview with Mr. Muhammad

Q: How do you feel about the two police helicopters sent to hover right over the crowd?

A: It's just one of the things that our people have to face, living in a white man's world, with the white man's laws.

Brief interview with two police officers

First officer:

Q: How do you feel about the intense police presence at the Million Youth March, which is intended for peace?

A: It's not my fault; the mayor made that decision.

Second, officer same question:

A: I'm just doing my job; I just want to go home.

Brief interview with member of 5% (percent) Nation

Name: Born Savior

Q: Do you feel the youth who attended the march got the message?

A: I can't pass judgement. Only time will tell.

Q: Did you learn anything in the presentations that you didn't already know?

A: No. If I did, I can't remember.

Follow up Q: Do you feel that anybody else learned anything?

A: Yes, they learned about unity and that we as people need to overcome the negative myths about our African American people.
