Oprah lends a hand to The Brotherhood/SisterSol

by Jianna Caines

Once again the innovative organization known as The Brotherhood continues to take steps toward improving the reality of young adults within the African-American community. Previously located at Columbia's Teachers College, The Brotherhood was evicted from that site, but destiny had its own plans. Due to their hard work, they received recognition from one of the most influential Black women on television, Oprah Winfery, who awarded them with enough money to fund their organization and purchase a brownstone in Harlem. Although The Brotherhood was able to purchase this building,, a few months ago it was in desperate need of serious reconstruction. Currently, it is still under renovation as it moves closer and closer to the picture-perfect environment for young people to grow and manifest their talents.

While still getting adjusted to their new home, The Brotherhood has made several strides since our last report. Recently, a group ofstudents demonstrated their political activism on a national level by participating in the protest against Bush's inauguration in Washington D.C. This demonstrates their political activism in events that not only effect the community and the state, but also the nation.

The Brotherhood is a very close program that does not admit members every month; this allows participants to grow with each other and become a family. Those who are involved in the Brotherhood consider it a life-long program that helps manifest members' talents and create a strong identity.

According to the founder of the Brotherhood, in order to educate the young brothers who participate, there are a series of programs and classes one must take. There are tutorial programs that are provided for all ages, group discussions about life and problems that they may face, field trips, and even one-on-one mentoring.

Recently the Brotherhood has expanded to create a section devoted to women who also want the same type of unity and activism. This program, provides support for young women while incorporating them with the Brotherhood curriculum.
