Digital Clubhouse Network For The Digital Age

by Kelly Koblacki

The Digital Clubhouse Network (DCN) is a non-profitable organization that is dedicated to "using the power of the networked multimedia to build better communities." Since 1996 the DCN has been trying to bring people together through the use of technology and eliminate the ongoing "Digital Divide" between those who have access and knowledge to the age of technology and those who don't.

The DCN is cost free except for the requested donation of time, 10 hours a week for adults and 20 for youth. The DCN is not a class teaching word processing. It does however specialize in digital story making, web design, appropriate internet use and a workshops that has brought together breast cancer survivors, victims of domestic violence, personal histories of World War II and also helped people with disabilities tell their story about a "differently abled" lifestyle. "Everyone has a story worth telling" said Martie Kraussman director of DCN.

Program coordinator Kawi Mailutha runs the Digitally Abled Producers Project (DAPP) program at the DCN's facility. It is open to students between the ages of 13- 21. If you are between those ages and are interested in learning about advanced skills in technology, artistic expression and being a team player as well as a leader, then you might be interested in DAPP.

The DCN has received substantial media attention in many countries throughout the world such as the US, Europe and Japan. Twice the Smithsonian Institute has honored DCN for its "visionary use of information technology to effect positive educational, political and economic change in society."

The DCN is reaching out to the community with the intentions of bringing people together through the use of technology. For more information and details please visit their web site www.digiclub.org and maybe you'll decide to become a member of the Digital Clubhouse Network.
