Dancing in the studioRecently this reporter went to interview Pamela Babb, director of marketing and public relations, of Harlem School of the arts. Harlem School of the Arts is a non-profit organization. It was founded in 1964, by Dorothy Maynor. It is a place where students young and old, can learn the arts through active participation.

. The school is run by executive director Darryl Durham. It is located at 645 St. Nicholas Ave. NY, NY 10030. Before speaking to the director, we had a chance to speak to Melia Crumbley. A student violinist who has been studying at the school for seven years. Ms. Crumbley is also a marketing intern for Pamela Babb. As a marketing intern she got to meet Toni Braxton at the VH1 Fashion Awards, and Yolanda Adams of the Gospel Essence Awards. She also described to us about how she went to the Dominican Republic through the internship program. We asked her how she got her place as a marketing intern. She made it clear that the only two ways to be eligable to intern were to be an HSA student or to participate in the student exchange program. Which takes place in the summer.

drummers Ms. Crumbley led us on a tour of the school. On the upper floor was the music section, on the lower floor art and dance. In a music room we found a girl giving lessons to a younger student. Downstairs we found a class of students dancing African to a live drum. In another room Dimitri Povolotski and Cynthia Shipley-Willis were teaching

At the end of the tour, we were walked up to a higher level where Pamela Babb worked in a medium sized room at a desk with a computer. She apologized for the mess and mentioned how strangely, she always knew where her things were. She said her government grant proposals and entering the Arts administrative field made her organized. You could tell she was a hard worker. "I've worked at he Harlem School of the arts as marketing and public relations director for 5 years," she said. "I recieved my bachelors degree in music at Hampton University, and my masters at Colombia University as a professional singer.

Later, Darryl Durham, Executive Director of the school and conductor of the HSA Orchestra, made her director of Marketing and Public Relations. She told us of a time she went to Europe. "It was mid February," she said, "and my application was due in March; I had recieved it in January. I wanted to go to Europe so badly, I finished my application on the second week of February." From this came her even stronger belief that anything can be done if you put your mind to it. As a reporter I had to ask her if she liked her job and she replyed... "I love my job and I'm happy to be working here."

It is in my opinion that people should learn something about the arts. Not only would you have your own source of entertainment, but you'd be disciplining yourself, and quite possibly learning other cultures. Not to mention alot of fun. I personally would reccommend Harlem School of the Arts to anyone interested in the arts, from music, to dance, art and drama. This is a School with highly educated professionals. I speak of this School so highly because of my own experiences there. I was there for 6 years and I have to say that this is an extraordinary school. From this interview I learned and believed, that it is possible to have a job and love what you do.
