Is
Michael Schiavo concerned with his wife’s health or
the future inheritance?
While in her Pinellas Park home, Terri Schiavo suffered
a heart attack causing her to collapse. The fall resulted
in severe spinal damage, causing brain damage. The fall
was caused by a lack of potassium, a mineral that secures
strength. Further research concluded that her low potassium
was caused by Bulimia. Bulimia is a disease caused by constant
vomiting.
Up until March 31, Terri was in a vegetative state, with
the exception of physical stimulus she was unresponsive
to any form of interaction. Schiavo was sluggish at times
and unaware of her surroundings. At times she would grunt,
cry, scream, and have other emotional spurs at unpredictable
moments. Schiavo has no activity in her cerebral cortex.
She had been in the hospital for the last 15 years. Schiavo
was not progressing and her mental state showed no change
since 1990.
Terri’s family was disputing over her life. Schiavo
had no say in what happened to her. Over the
last seven years Michael Schiavo and Terri’s parents
Robert and Mary Schindler have gone back and forth to court.
Michael Schiavo repeatedly requested that the feeding tube
be removed and Terri’s parents asked for an emergency
reinsertion after the appeal sided with Mr. Schiavo. Michael
Schiavo claims that Terri stated that she would not want
to exist in a vegetated state. However, Mr.Schiavo had no
living will to back his claims. There is also the issue
of Terri’s inheritance money totaling to $1,050,000.
Michael Schiavo says that there is only about $50,000 left
due to medical care and court fees. He also claims that
he will donate any remanding money to charity. After bones
scan done in 2002, doctors have found previous injuries
to Schiavo including joints, knees, and along the spinal
area. Questions surfaced regarding domestic violence.
It’s funny how it wasn’t until Mr. Schiavo knew
of a possible inheritance that he asked for legal guardianship
of Terri Schiavo. A few years later he asked for the feeding
tube removal and brought up the statement that Terri Schiavo
asked for the removal if this ever happened to her.
Before Terri’s death, Robert and Mary Schindler (Terri’s
parents) stated that Terri was not in a vegetative state.
They even said that Terri smiles at them, puckers her lips
for a kiss, and had called them “Mom” and “Dad”
at one point. There are no witnesses of theses accounts.
The Schindle rs
say that Terri would never have asked for a tube removal
because of her religion. Terri Schiavo was a devout Roman
Catholic and removing her feeding tube would be the same
as committing suicide.
Hours
after Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube removal, Terri’s
father requested an emergency reinsertion. After constantly
losing every court decision, the Schindlers went to a higher
court. On March 21, President Bush signed legislation allowing
the federal courts to get involved in the conflict. In fact,
Bush took an early flight to Washington D.C to sign the
bill. The case was referred to the U.S Congress.
Unfortunately
for Robert and Mary Schindler, the U.S Congress denied the
case. Terri was able to survive without food and water for
thirteen days. Ten protesters were arrested for trying to
smuggle food and water to Terri. Michael Schiavo kept an
unyielding watch over Terri. The church pastor wasn’t
even allowed to put a sacramental wafer on her tongue. Terri
is survived by her husband, she was cremated on Friday.
