Martin Madness
Story and photos by Basil Washington

When I got off the train at 66th and Broadway, I couldn't believe the masses of people waiting outside of Tower Records to see the latest Latin sensation, Ricky Martin. There were hundreds of people, mainly women, hysterically screaming and cheering for a glimpse of the singer. Many fans came straight from school, while others camped out all night.

Ricky first started his career as a member of the boy group "Menudo". At the age of 12, he was the youngest member of the group. As Ricky got older, he got a role on General Hospital.

The first thing I did was take pictures of the crowd. I made my way through the crowd into an dumpster so I could get a clear view --I thought I would be the only one, but much to my surprise people had already beaten me to it. Many photographers were waiting to get a quick snap shop of the popular Latin heartthrob.

MTV, CBS, NBC, Telemundo (a Spanish station) and others camped there for hours. Only professional photographers and reporters were allowed inside Tower Records and I felt really bad about that. I wanted to see him just to take his picture.

After hearing that I couldn't go see him, I didn't know what to do. It was late and I was due back at HarlemLive.

Check out and have fun at his site:
