I am sure the events of September 11th have affected us in one way or another. Whether we know it or not we might have changed our daily routine as a result of fear. We might have changed our feelings toward persons of Arab descent as well as the way we treat them. Seven weeks have now passed since the events on September 11th, and here is how some of the people in Harlem feel about these issues. Name:
(not
given) Since the September 11th attacks on New York, what changes have you been making in your daily routine? "No changes besides going to funerals." How do you think the rise in patriotism will affect how we treat immigrants? "It will probably have no effect on them." How have you treated persons of Arab descent since the attacks? "I examine them a little more often." If you saw Osama bin Laden, what questions would you like to ask him? "I would have nothing to say to him."
Name:
Tony (last name not given) Since the September 11th attacks on New York, what changes have you been making in your daily routine? "I have made no changes in my daily routine, but the events on September 11th have changed my life. I was in the area that day, and I heard a loud sound. Around 11 a.m. I got closer to the site and saw a policeman and fireman hugging and crying then I knew things were not looking good. As a result of these events I am a lot more alert and aware, and I no longer take life for granted." How do you think the rise in patriotism will affect how we treat immigrants? "They may realize the amount of freedom and opportunities they have in America." How have you treated persons of Arab descent since the attacks? "I have not changed the way I have treated them, but I am more alert around them." If you saw Osama bin Laden, what questions would you like to ask him? "If your God is so great how come he has you hiding and eating out of caves while we live in the lap of luxury?"
Name:
John
Taylor Since the September 11th attacks on New York, what changes have you been making in your daily routine? "I have been more cautious about my surroundings. Watching my surroundings as well as the people around me." How do you think the rise in patriotism will affect how we treat immigrants? "No one will really be able to live safely because now everyone will be viewed as a threat to America. If you're Arab you'll be looked upon as being suspicious. If you're black you'll still be viewed as a threat." How have you treated persons of Arab descent since the attacks? "I don't feel that they should be able to live better than the residents of a country that they're not from." If you saw Osama bin Laden, what questions would you like to ask him? "I would ask him, 'Why did you kill so many innocent people?'"
Name:
Howard
Lovett Since the September 11th attacks on New York, what changes have you been making in your daily routine? "I try not to go down by the World Trade Center because I lost six friends of 30 years in the collapse. I avoid the area because it would upset me too much." How do you think the rise in patriotism will affect how we treat immigrants? "I'm skeptical because after this year America will go back to the same attitude of fear and hate that has plagued it up to this point. It has become an us or them mentality, so that will raise too many issues for us to overcome." How have you treated persons of Arab descent since the attacks? "I treat them the same as I would treat anybody else. I have three kids that I have to take care of, so I don't really have spare time for anybody else." If you saw Osama bin Laden, what questions would you like to ask him? "He killed six of my friends, so I would just shoot him and keep on moving."
Name:
Terry Ann Matthews Since the September 11 attacks on New York, what changes have you been making in your daily routine? "I haven't changed it one bit." How have you treated persons of Arab descent since the attacks? "I treat them well because it doesn't matter who you are." If you saw Osama bin Laden, what questions would you like to ask him? "I would ask him if he had anything to do with the attacks on the World Trade Center. If he says no, it's no. If he says yes, then it's messed up."
