For those of us who don't know another person of color as been a victim of police brutality, Diallo, Dorismond, Furgenson , families & friends and people of color are the victims.

After about a good month or so people forget about what happened or what is happening. Or maybe black people need to just start speaking up. This was our goal for today's "Man On The Street". Our goal was to go out and see what our people think about police brutality . Have people forgotten about our rights?

Have people forgotten about cruel things that happen from day to day or have they chosen to blank it out of their memory? Today, March 23, 2000 our goals were accomplished.

Is the death of Dorismond relevant to your life? Explain. "I think he was a victim, he was a victim of brutality. There are a lot of organizations that are available to support the beliefs. He needs as much support as he can possible get."

Why do you think people disregard events such as Diallo, Dorismond and Furgenson? "They don't really disregard it, they cannot really bring the issue to a certain point where something can be done. But they are very well aware of that situation."

Do you think the Diallo verdict has given police officers more license to kill people of color? "We are in the city where this type of brutality is very likely to happen and it happened we cannot say that it will never happen again."

Is the death of Dorismond relevant to your life? Explain. "Yes, because he is one of us and if it could happen to him, it could happen to us."

Why do you think people disregard events such as Diallo, Dorismond and Furgenson? "Because black people mind their business. They just think about protecting themselves and their own."

unknown
Occupation: Case Worker

Is the death of Dorismond relevant to your life? Explain. Yes, the death of Diallo brings a feeling of paranoia." It raises the question "Am I next or my children or my neighbor or my people?"

Why do you think people disregard events such as Diallo, Dorismond and Furgenson? "Maybe because there is a sense hopelessness among black people. They may feel like they cannot make a difference one or the other."

Do you think the Diallo verdict has given police officers more license to kill people of color? "Yes, because the system is set up to support any actions taken by their colleagues. The rules need to be changed, however to much money is invested in prisons in order to get a return on investments made into prisons ( i.e. corporation corp corp corp)"

Name: Albert
Residency: Harlem
Age:
15
Occupation: Student

Is the death of Dorismond relevant to your life? Explain. "Yes because it makes me think about what I used to do. I used to run up and down the street and hop trains and other stupid stuff. What I used to do could have gotten me killed or just because I was a black man shot."

Why do you think people disregard events such as Diallo, Dorismond and Furgenson? "Because some people think that cops are here to protect their preserves. That person may have a gun or some thing."

Do you think the Diallo verdict has given police officers more license to kill people of color? "Not really but if they can do it once and get away with it they can do it again and get away with it again and again."

Is the death of Dorismond relevant to your life? Explain. "Yes because I am another young black man out here in New York City and it seems like there's a problem with the police and the way they enforce themselves on black people"

Why do you think people disregard events such as Diallo, Dorismond and Furgenson? "Because people feel that it doesn't't concern them as individuals when in reality it really does."

Do you think the Diallo verdict has given police officers more license to kill people of color? "Of course it does I don't see it any other way."

Name: Caesar
Residency: Harlem
Age:
17
Occupation: Student

Is the death of Dorismond relevant to your life? Explain. "I don't think it's right and I don't't think it's good or any thing because it could be me my friends or even my family. You know and a lot of that has been going on now. You know me and my organization, the NYC CRIPs,we have been trying to do things ourselves, without actually going to war with the cops or other people. Right now we're in the midst of working on a peace treaty between the Bloods, so that we can go ahead and reunite and get at the cops. Not thug on them in the sense of violence, but at a political level where they can't hit us back. If we retaliate on them(Police), for these brothers that have been getting killed lately, they can retaliate on us bigger because they have helicopters and stuff like and we don't have that type of artillery. We have to hit them on a political level, where its going to hurt them for real."

Why do you think people disregard events such as Diallo, Dorismond and Furgenson? "My personal feeling on that is, people are scared. They feel that being quiet will be the better way to handle a situation, but being quiet is the reason why its the way it is now, because if you're quiet they just feel that they can keep on doing it. So we have to speak out."

Do you think the Diallo verdict has given police officers more license to kill people of color? "Absolutely, Safir and Giuliani are new advances of Adolf Hilter and Julius Caesar, the reason I say this is that NYC cops have a license to kill now and when those four cops were let off that was permission saying you can kill whoever you want because you have a badge and a gun."

Name: Gwendolyn
Residency: Bronx
Age:
Unknown
Occupation: School Aid

Is the death of Dorismond relevant to your life? Explain. "Yes it is relevent to my life because I have sons and I have daughters and there's generations to come and I would like for them to be able to walk the streets safely, without having to worry about being shot to death or beaten to death."

Why do you think people disregard events such as Diallo, Dorismond and Furgenson? "Because they don't live in that particular environment, and they don't believe that it could happen to them. If this brutality happens to one it can happen to another. "

Do you think the Diallo verdict has given police officers more license to kill people of color? "Yes I believe the Diallo verdict has given the police the license to kill, beat, setup, and anything else that violates their human rights. Look at the news in the papers and on television, since the verdict at least one black man has been shot a week. Only God knows what violations, and brutalities has been committed, that have not been public news. "
