Election 2000

Bush And Gore On The Economy

by Juan Rosario

I guess by now, many people know about the most valuable candidates running for president. It's been in the local newspapers, web sites, and on your idiot box (T.V). If you have been lost, it's Vice President Al Gore and the Governor of Texas George Bush and Independent candidate Ralph Nader.

These candidates have been feuding over many issues people want to know about. For instance the environment, economy and education. All of these issues are important and valid; but the one that seems to concern people the most is the economy. From the article that I read it seems that both candidates have a good mind set about the economy. College savings plans, Internet privacy, retirement taxes and the "Digital Divide" are some of the main issues highlighted.

On college savings, Vice President Gore is proposing a national tuition program that allows for tax-free savings. The national tuition savings program would be linked with the states prepaid tuition plan. Governor Bush wants to expand educational savings accounts and have the IRS allow tax fee investments to parents who are obtaining prepaid tuition for their children. Governor Bush desires to raise the contribution limits the IRA has on the 401(K)-retirement plan. Vice President Gore's ideal is to let people keep their old plans and add more money into the individual retirement accounts.

For privacy on the Internet Vice President Gore proposes an electronic Bill of Rights. He is currently working with 25 Internet companies to provide a protection plan for children against explicit material and a safety strategy for Internet identity theft. Governor Bush would make sure E-commerce consumers have the final say about what information is being collected on them and how it is used.

On the "Digital Divide" Governor Bush had much to say. He wants to work with small community groups to create programs for adult computer literacy in the low-income bracket. Governor Bush would give 3 billion dollars to Technology Funds and 65 million dollars a year toward research to see how technology is enhancing the education of students.

Vice President Gore and Governor Bush both have good defenses about questions on the economy. It is hard to develop an opinion on which one I would vote for based on what they said on this topic. I like some of the answers that both candidates said, but I am undecided on who to vote for.

Hopefully this information has helped to make your choice easier. Who will you vote for on Election Day, Tuesday November 7th?
