Angel accepting award from the KingWhen a person from Harlem thinks of Sweden, they usually think of some place cold and far away, not a bunch of kids from Harlem going to compete in the Global Bangemann Challenge. So to tell people that you shook the King's hand after he presented me an award seems more like a fib.

HarlemLive crew with two of the judgesWhat I saw as a fright flight - I don't like to fly - turned into a lifetime experience that will never be forgotten. Averaging only an hour of sleep a night with no signs of darkness had become a huge factor in our daytime activities. HarlemLive was booked with plenty of media limelight and scheduled lunches with the Mayor and other dignitaries of Sweden.

The Staff members that went to Sweden include; Beale, 17, Angel Colon, 15, Khalid Muhammed, 16, and Jerlena Rhodes, 16. The Director and founder of HarlemLive, Richard Calton, accompanied the teens.

A large majority of the 18 recipients of the Global Bangeman Challenge were from Europe, Central and Latin America, Oceania, Egypt, Bangladesh and The United States.

These awards recognized the successful use of information and technology. Winners were chosen from 11 categories ranging from health and community care to improving traffic and transport.

Angel and the King of Sweden at the Global Bangemen Challenge

Feeling like underdogs, we overcame the odds and won in our category, Culture and Media. Before we received the award we were very busy attending dinners and going on photo shoots. Then things just got crazy. The day after the ceremony we saw ourselves in magazines and cover pages of local newspapers. Receiving a lot "fame" was not too bad for me because I love attention but all the reporting and taking pictures does get a bit tiring after awhile.

We went to several places in Sweden in which we were congratulated for our achievements. It felt good knowing everyone noticed our work in a different part of the world.

The only thing that was bad about the trip was the food. We were not accustomed to their different types of food so we kept an eye out for what we ate. Some of the food that was served to us was Reindeer, Salmon, and Chicken Filling, which I chose not to eat.

During our two days of "freedom" we only had at least an hour and an half of sleep due to city excitement. We saw many attractions from the old part of Sweden. There was all different types of people who were touring that part of Sweden. We also checked out the amusement park located in an isolated island of Sweden. There, we road roller coasters, bumper cars and the "Frit Fall" or Free Fall. Lines were long but they did move fast allowing us more time to observe the park. There are many things to share with the HarlemLive readers but as we continue our last 48 hours of the "HarlemLive Tour."

There is just a bit that can be done in such short period of time.

Editor's note: There will be more stories from HarlemLive's trips to Sweden and DC. Come back again. Although we're "closed" this month, we will be posting several interesting items.
