Tsunami Relief
by: Mera Beckford

By now you all may know that on December 26th 2004, tragedy ripped through Southeast Asia resulting in the death of over 140,000 people. Tsunamis, are huge destructive waves, but this was a large-scale disaster and it is being called the deadliest tsunami in recorded history. The tsunami came with very little warning hitting India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Indonesia hard. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and geologists announced that the tsunami was caused by an undersea earthquake.

It has been three weeks and like real New Yorkers and good hearted Americans, many people and organizations have synchronized their resources in an effort to provide some greatly needed relief to the survivors of this disaster. Here in Harlem, The Church of the Annunciation, Antioch Baptist Church, and even HarlemLIVE joined the cause by collecting donations and clothing too.

According to Ms. Clinton, Antioch Baptist Church is in the process of collecting money to be given to the Red Cross, and Christina Fizanque explained that The Church of the Annunciation collected $2,154, which was given to the archdiocese for distribution.

As of December 31, 2004 the U.S. Government pledged over 350 million dollars to the tsunami relief effort. Celebrities around the world also made a big showing of their own support by way of Steven Spielberg promising 1.5 million dollars, actress Sandra Bullock putting forward one million of her own, and other celebs such as Jackie Chan and Sting performing in benefit concerts.

Current relief efforts are highly focused on providing the necessities such as sanitation and fresh water. Worries for the coming weeks for the tsunami survivors include housing, food and supplying help to isolated areas.

If you would like to help out the Red Cross recommends that you provide them with airline miles, and/or cash donations. For more information on donation to the Red Cross please visit: http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html
