Dorothy Jean Dandridge; was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 9, 1922. This multitalented singer, dancer, and actress broke all barriers to become one of the first African American female movie stars to grace the silver screen. She was also the first African-American to be nominated for an Academy Award for best actress, and grace the cover of Life magazine.

Although Ms. Dandridge's life was short lived, she is remembered as an cultural icon whose exceptional talent and struggle for stardom paved the way for the women of today.
