MAYA ANGELOU

Maya Angelou Marguerite Johnson, now Maya Angelou, was born on April 4th 1928 in St. Louis and raised in Arkansas.

She was a child from a broken home, raped at the age of eight, was a mute for five years and still managed to accomplish all of these things in her lifetime.

Throughout the many trials and tribulation that she had to undergo, Maya had became a very accomplished writer. Angelou has published ten bestseller books and has written several magazine articles earning her Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominations since her debut. Among her many accomplishments, Angelou is also a distinguished poet as well as historian, author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director.

Maya Angelou was among the first African- American women to hit the bestsellers list with her semi-autobiography " I know why the caged bird sings" a book that she had written about her childhood in St. Louis and her grandparents in Stamps, Arkansas. In 1993 she delivered a poem at Bill Clinton request at his presidential inauguration.

At the age of 72, Maya Angelou has traveled down enough roads for 10 lifetimes and she continues to because after all like Maya says " All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes."
