This charitable heart was born on March 7, 1908 in Wayne County, Mississippi and unfortunately she died on September 26, 1999.

Every charitable act is a stepping stone towards heaven and that is exactly where Oseola McCarty's beautiful soul rests. Raised in Hattiesburg, Mississippi McCarty became used to laboring at an early age. At the age of 11 she had to dropout of the sixth grade to help her mom take care of her ill aunt. McCarty was never able to return to school to continue her education. So in order to earn money McCarty took a job as a washer for families that would hire her.

She washed and ironed clothes for over 5 decades and officially retired at the 75 years old. After 75 years of living her life McCarty regretted but two things that she never got her full education and that she never became a nurse. But one that she had achieved after was financial comfort. Throughout her working years McCarty had managed to save 100,000 dollars. After a very short deliberation with herself McCarty decided that she wanted to use the money for a higher purpose then just spending it on herself, so she decided to donate it.

McCarty donated all of her savings to students at the University of Southern Mississippi so that they could receive something she never did an education. The returns that we reap from our actions are not always but for McCarty they were. She received several honors for her generous gift love including, She was invited to the White House by the President, She was asked to carry the Olympic Torch for the 1996 Olympics, and in 1997 she got to live out her dream when she received and honorary doctorate from Harvard University.
