In
today's world there are a lot of things that, we as females
are offended by. For me personally, it is being called out of my name.
The only thing that I like being referred to is the name that my mother
gave me. I know that I am not the only one that feels this way. I can
see it in the faces of numerous girls that pass men on the street that
are constantly hooting and hollering at them. This disrespectful scenario
usually ends the same way every time. The girl being called a hoe or
a b***h because they have ignored the guys and their feelings has been
hurt.
Name-calling
is not only a problem within our communities, but in the music that
we listen to and the videos that we watch. Especially, in rap music
where there seems to exist an excessive amount of degrading lyrics towards
women. Don't get me wrong, I like rap music just as much as the next
person, but I think that I can live without hearing Memphis Bleek talk
about his "Gangsta B***h". Radio stations think that if they
blank the words out that it is okay because we are too dumb to understand
that they are talking about us in insulting ways. Some might say, "Hey
they are not referring to me so it doesn't matter," but it does.
Its just like if someone were to call you a racial slur that would
offend you. So this is the same exact thing. It is still offensive,
hurtful and degrading. Females
may think that there is nothing that we can do about it but there is.
We can voice our opinions about it to your friends or anybody around
that happens to have this attitude towards females. We can stop anyone
that lets words like that slip out of their mouths. Believe it or not
your opinion does count. Another way to end this problem is to stop
using that type of language ourselves. It makes no sense to hear a little
three year old call someone any of these words. If people would take
time out to think before they speak that would help tremendously. We, as a society, should stop applauding the use of this type of language thinking that being called a b***h is ok. Female rappers also help to contribute to this disrespectful behavior through their own music. Trina, a female rapper, referred to herself as the "baddest b***h in a song of the same name and in Missy Elliot's song "Lick shots" she refers to herself as a "crazy ho". I like both of these rappers but I dont think that to be a good female rap artist in the music industry requires that you set yourselves and your female listeners lower than we already feel because of the way the male rappers depict us. What sense does it make to say that it's not okay to let Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and any other male rapper call us these names when we refer to ourselves as the same thing or allowing them the right just because they have money. Women can really change things if we abide and follow these standards not only will we see ourselves in a new light but others will also. They will stop disrespecting us because we have stopped disrespecting ourselves. And that will make the world a much better place. |
