The "Get into the Loop" campaign was kicked off in March of 2000 by the Lupus Foundation of America Inc. The campaign gained national attention when Howie Dee a member of the musical group, Back Street Boys wore an orange loop on his lapel at the Grammy Awards. Howies sister died from lupus related complications last year. This orange loop symbolizes lupus awareness. Wanting to do their part, SISTAS for the CAUSE; a grass roots organization, held it's first annual Lupus Awareness Day this spring. The event was a day for healing, learning, reflecting, celebrating, networking and sharing. The program opened with a touching prayer and greeting by Myna Majors, Founder of Sistas for the cause. Keeping the program flowing was the dynamic Mistress of Ceremonies Sister Lateefah Abdul-Jabar. The ambience was set off by merchandise vendors, balloons and refreshments to help make the event very festive. Several riveting and extravagant dance and drum companies kept the audience on the edge of their seats with powerful performances. Pedro Juan Santiago Jr., program coordinator for the East Harlem Lupus Cooperative was the first guest speaker to take the microphone. Mr. Santiago was very informative and engaged the audience in some extremely intriguing dialogue. This allowed various audience members living with lupus the opportunity to share their personal testimonies with the audience. The highlight of the event came midway through the program. The stage was dark, the curtains closed. Then out of nowhere an eerie calm transcended throughout the auditorium. A very somber voice began to speak over the sound system. " Please join hands with your neighbors and let's have a moment of silence." "Send forth your energy and strength to give our next speaker the courage to read her tribute." With a slow quivering voice Tiombe' Majors gave an incredible emotional and tear wrenching tribute to her mother Myna Majors. During and after her tribute there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd. A good time was had by all. Tou Che' to the Sistas for the Cause.
