What If Bush?

by Obatunji McKnight

"When I was a boy I was told anybody could become president; IÕm beginning to believe."

-Clarence Darrow

Another Bush in the White HouseÉwhat were people thinking? Gee whiz, I thought people would have more sense than that. There is a proverb about situations like this. "If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch." Matthew 15:14.

I do not know about you but I do not like ditches or falling into them. I guess maybe I am seeing this from the wrong viewpoint. Maybe he would be a good president. Then again, maybe the LA Clippers will take the NBA championship this year. I really hope that in the event of his winning this election he proves me horribly wrong. If elected Bush has some issues to take care of right away if he plans to survive his four-year term. First, he has a terrible image with the minority community and low-income families. He needs the support of these groups to make his presidency successful. I hope he does not fail to realize these groups do make up the majority of the population of this country. However, this will only be necessary IF he wins. So maybe I should stop rambling on.

What really surprised me was the beautiful act the Bush campaign put on when they found out there was to be a recount. The indignant toleration was one of the best performances I have seen ever. Then they pretended to be confident that through the recounts and after all of the litigation they would remain victorious. On the other hand, maybe they really believed. ThatÕs even scarier. Then I listened to some of the statements made by their campaign. They seem to be saying, "These discrepancies were there before why check them now?"

Well to that, I say phooey! There has never been a presidential race this close before and to make sure there is a complete fulfillment of democracy promised every citizen in this country every precaution should be taken. Like IÕve said before and IÕll say again, if a president is elected and the people feel there was anything shady or unfair about how he made it to his position they will make his term a living hell. These discrepancies have never been closely checked before because their votes have never come close to deciding the president. Not that I am saying it was OK to not do ignore them before, I am saying to check them out now. If I were making a decision like this, I would do the same thing. It is the only logical thing to do. I mean if you watch a basketball game between to rivals and the referee is one of their brothers who was a better chance to win the game just because of that?

I wonder what life will be like for me post-Clinton. But then again, I have his wife working for me in the senate so maybe she will try to buffer Bush off us New Yorkers. Having to choose the lesser of two evils to be my president has left me feeling somewhat bad. I do not have anything Gore in particular but he lacks what makes a great president. I prefer to think of Gore as wise. They say a wise man knows his limits a great man has none. Gore may never be great but in knowing your limits you can set realistic goals that will prove to be beneficial to all of us. As for if Bush is elected, I have one of my favorite quotes for him, "No man will ever bring out of the Presidency the reputation, which carries him into it." I hope that to be true. But, only in a positive way.
