The Truth

by Eddie Aung

My life's goal is to get rich and gain people's acceptance . In order to achieve that, I have to try hard and that is not possible in my country, Burma, which has limited human rights and so many strict rules and regulations. Since I was born, I have been interested in a variety of books about people who started their lives with nothing and ended up like kings. However, it is not possible to achieve this in my country. Human rights abuses hinder every attempt made by people with real ambitions. Education standards are so low that most of the students who graduate never have a chance to go to college, not because people don't have money but because the government has closed every college for fear of riots and demonstrations

I have to say that my whole life changed when I came to the US in March 2000. If I have to admit it , it wasn't an exciting trip after all. As usual, it was hard for me to catch up with the schoolwork like every immigrant. It didn't go well for my sophomore year in Beacon School(). The grades on the transcript didn't go as well as I expected. However, I learned the importance of life for the first time. Even though I didn't do that great in school, I learned a lot of computer software and some basic principles of economics. I will not say it is challenging, as I thought everything could be done

One of the things I like the most in the US is the library. I can get anything I want from the library. You just name it. Books, CDs, Videos, DVDs are so easy to find that I was really amazed, at first. The education in the US is so different from my country that it took me a while to understand how important it is. By taking advantage of the library, I saved a great deal of money by not buying books. I was not serious about books that much in my country. This might be also because I never had a chance to get a book. However, I have to say that I am lucky. According to the saying "Knowledge is Power," I got a tremendous amount of knowledge from books and I believe that it will be helpful for my goals

Another thing I really understood when I got to the US is time. I never knew that time is important until last year. I had a lot of time to spend in my country, as there was nothing to do. When I got to US, my philosophy of time changed totally. I start to value time by doing beneficial things such as reading, practicing computer skills. However, this does not mean that I never play games. I usually relax by watching movies or playing computer games. I look back to my past and see myself spending time worthlessly. When I also look around my environment, I usually see people spending time worthlessly. It is hard to explain the importance of time. You just have to realize it yourself. If someone tried to give me a lecture more than a year ago, I would not have understood. The most important thing to understand is the importance of time and how to use it properly. There are many ways to spend it, but the best way is by reading which gives a great deal of knowledge.
