Devil May Cry 2 -- It Just Might Make You Cry

by: Lamont Sparrow

At first this review was going to be divided into two sections a “pre-played’ review and a “post-played’ review but due to frustration and disappointment it got changed to this…

For those who don’t know, Devil May Cry was Capcom’s newest franchise since Resident Evil. In fact this game was originally intended to be Resident Evil 4, but in the middle of production, the head honchos wanted another spin on the series. DMC was created.

This game took the styling of Resident Evil/Biohazard to a whole other level. Imagine Resident Evil, but with a gothic twist and some incredibly killer monsters and graphics.

Despite hilariously humble origins that Capcom employees are quick to gloss over, Devil May Cry shipped to mass acclaim last holiday season and quickly reached platinum status, selling way over a million units.

In doing so, the development team inadvertently ensured the product's place in history as one of the foremost franchises on the PlayStation 2.

I loved the first game for what it was. A game to tide my cravings for the next Resident Evil video game, since the last one disappointed me so. Devil May Cry was the best at what it was: a new game with an old feel that made you feel alive! That was the past, now welcome to the present…

Simply put, Devil May Cry 2 didn’t live up to my expectations. The first game offered so many different options, such as weapons and upgrades, it made the game more replayable. The cut scenes were plentiful and exciting, the characters were memorable and the gameplay was just plain hard! These were wonderful things that are wanted and needed in many games. Sadly, Devil May Cry 2 had no such things.

I’m sure the Devil wanted to cry when this game was made. Since the game was pushed back from a December 2002 release, you would think ‘hey they’re putting more stuff in this game to make it at least twice the game the first was’. Unfortunately, the game is half of what the first game was. It has two discs and features a female playable character… no, it’s not Trish, sort of. The game is a spin-off of Resident Evil 2; where you play as two different characters in the same situation. You both experience different sides of the same story, so you don’t have one character having an adventure while the other is simply lying back, chilling. The bad side to this is that the story is just boring and full of so many holes I thought I was playing Swiss Cheese 2. The main villain is so underdeveloped it was horrible. And the cut scenes are so short and few it’s a shame. Where did all the time, effort, and ideas from the first game go? I think I may have been a victim of my own design. I sat at my computer for weeks looking at new movies for this game while wiping up the drool from my chin. What a waste of bodily fluids.

And the fact that they “added” Trish as a playable character is a shame to her character and creators. They placed a new character in the old characters’ settings. It’s hard to explain so 1) I won’t and 2) you don’t wanna know. The only good thing about this game is some of the new cool moves but other than that, just leave the game alone. The game is horribly easy. All you basically have to do is stand in one place and shoot. This goes for bosses and simple level (“mission”) creatures alike. The first was incredibly hard. So hard in fact, that the gamers decided to put a ‘learning curve” on this one. Unfortunately there must have been a handful of failures in this class.
If they make a Devil May Cry 3, please don’t cuz the devil will not be the only one crying… the consumers will be too.
