Video Day

story & photos by Elliot Price

On June 23, Harlemlive took a big leap into the world of video production. At the Walter Reade Theater young people of all ages showed videos that they produced that expressed their views on today's world. This was a day for youth to show their reactions to some common stereotypes. Children and teens addressed why they may dislike police officers or adults because they were victims of incidents involving racial profiling. For example, the way a person might wear his or her clothing might provoke an adult to stereotype that person negatively when in reality, that person should be judged by their actions and not their appearance.

One film which intrigued me was "Living in Two Worlds" by Todd Chandler, which exposed the stereotypes of Muslims within today's society. The video showed a co-ed Muslim school with students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Students from the schools stated that they need a school to attend where they can freely express their religion. "It took me about seven months to complete 'Living in Two Worlds.' There isn't one way but by using film, journalism, and media we can begin changing society's negative views," said Mr. Chandler.

Harlemlive also talked to nine year old Forrest Peralta a reporter from KIDZ news. Mr. Peralta was featured in a video called "Lift Every Voice" which expressed how American citizens' voices are being ignored.

The video mainly showed disgust with the Bush presidency. Overall, the meeting was a success in revealing some of the prejudices that Americans hold such as, negative stereotypes of African Americans. After the screening attendees were served food and talked to some of the writers, editors, and producers of the videos. To summarize the screening and to put it into words it would best be said, "In America every voice should be heard!"
