Jericho Computing School
story by Marcus Sainsbury, Eudora Shackleford, Khalid Muhammad - photos by Basil Washington & Khalid Muhammad

What if you had the chance to learn computer skills at the small fee of seven dollars an hour? The Jericho computer school offers this and more as HarlemLive recently found out. Earl Davis, the Director of the computer school and his recruits expressed feelings of happiness. Happiness created from the work which is done for the benefit of those in the Harlem community.

In our interveiw with Earl, we learned that his computer school is an offshoot of the original Jericho Projects. These projects started 12 years ago as housing for the homeless and those people on their way to "recovery". Thus, the computer center was founded to give the residents the opportunity to develop computer skills. The center also provides internships so that qualified residents can also learn customer service skills.

The center provides classes in: Windows, Word, Excel, and much more. The cost is around seven dollars an hour for rental of these computers. Earl said that "I love my work and hope that more people will seek to become more computer literate this way more opportunities will be accessable to them.
