When people want to know the scoop around town and get a fresh cut, Harlem’s Own may be the place to go! “Harlem’s Own” is a new hair cutting establishment located at 55 Lenox Avenue on 113th Street and is the freshest place for the latest hair styles.

The ten-month old barber shop is also a place where people can feel safe and at ease. According to 30-year old Warren “Moon” Phillips, owner and hair stylist, “The style of cutting and the different people we get to cut” makes this a unique barber shop in a community famous for black hair styles. What makes this shop so unique? Moon says, “I wanted to let everyone know where I’m from, what I stand for and what this shop stands for.” Moon, a self taught barber says he taught him self before going to barber school. Today, he enjoys a good conversation about music and girls with his co-worker Jeff. Jeff L. found out about Harlem’s Own barber shop through his sister. On any given day you’ll find the workers of Harlem’s Own cutting any of the latest styles with prices ranging from $5.00 to $25.00.

They have perfected waves, blow outs and regular cuts, just to name a few. The youth of tday are advised by Moon to stay in school and try to take as much advice as possible before stepping into the real world. Jeff urges youth to become part of their community and help bring it up. Moon, making a statement about black ownership, ended the interview by saying, “Putting a down payment on the joint, and knowing it’s mine was the best feeling in the world.

" I like this barber shop because it is the closest and I'm very particular about my sons hair. "Says Melody, mother of two boys who receive hair cuts on the regular for three months.
