July
21, 2001 was a day of great achievement. Many African-American poets,
authors, and freelance writers came from all over the country to accept
awards for their prestigious work. Paul Robeson Jr., son of the late
civil rights activist Paul Robeson, stated that while growing up values
and morals should especially be imprinted into youngsters minds,
because that is the "foundation for success. Mr. Robeson
autographed copies of his auto biography based on his fathers
legacy.
Due to the tremendous heatwave during the event, many tents were set
up to sell
everything from ice cold lemonade to chilled smoothies. But the humidity
outside could not match the heat emmitting from the lyricist inside.
Those of which putting their lyrical skills to the test, spoke from
the heart on African -American history. Outside supporters won free
gifts, courtesy of 105.7 WBLS, for answering correct questions on black
history. One of the questions asked what was Sojourner Truths
birth name? And of course everyone knows its Isabella Baumfree.
From the free gifts, to the signing of books, the whole event was a
book lovers dream.
Representives
from the magazine Vibe gave out there new issue to the public for free.
"Good people always come out on top" says a local activist
Bob Greenith. Bob came to support all the authors. Matter of a fact
he's a upcoming author his self. He recently wrote a book called "what
if"it basically gives new meaning to the word "nigger."
Over all the event was a big success.
The
event started in the early morning and ended in the late afternoon.
"The artist
must elect to fight for freedam or slavery. I have made my choice. I
had no alternative" words from Paul Robeson. I leave you with these
words to understand how many African Americans feel towards our history.
