March"

Towards the end of the
Million Youth March, the Authorities pulled the cords on the
generators to end the march early. The march was originally
planned to end at 8 o-clock pm, but based on an appeal by
Giuliani the court made a decision for it to end earlier.
From
the eyes of those standing by the stage, police officers came out of
squad cars and well as the subway on 125th street on Lenox Avenue. As
the police tried to get on stage, the crowd struggled to keep them off.
Bystanders were then attacked police officers. in addition, the people
on stage were beaten and maced. A few people were hurt (some went to
the hospital for minor injuries). We were told one individual, Ma Zn
was arrested for throwing a chair at the police and trying to stop them
from coming on stage. " The riot was a scene waiting to happen" said
an attendant of the march. There were fewer police at the beginning
of the march than there were towards the end. Many people behind the
stage said "that the police came out of squad vans and out of the subways
of 125th and 116th".
An
group of policemen formed a line across the stage while, another set
formed one from the sidewalk to the middle of the street to protect
the police on stage. There was an estimanted of 6,000 Cops at the march
from the beginning but by the end there were 6,500 or more. Some marchers
said the police sprayed mace on the crowd. Like the man who was arrested,
taken to the hospital and released from jail the next day.
A man who requested
"Freedom" used, instead of his real name, was accused of
throwing a chair at a police officer from the crowd. But the
cops said he tried to stop them from entering onto the
stage. He went on trial for this. Eyewitnesses at the march
said that a feud broke out between the people and the cops .
The so-called riot started when one of the cops pushed a man
in a wheelchair for not moving fast enough.
It was reported on the
news that Virginia C.Fields, Manhattan Borough President,
was asking for an investigation by the Federal Justice
Department to find out who was responsible for the call to
close the 125th & 116th street subway, and the use of
police force.
Mayor Giuliani replied
and, said, "I made the call so the investigation is over and
can not go any farther".
