Malcolm X Plaza
story and photos by Enita Okodiko

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, Saturday August 5,2000

When you rise from the train station for the 2 & 3 line at 110th Street and Lenox Avenue, you see a beautiful park under construction. Even though it is not completed, from the flowers, plants and trees that are already placed in the park, you can tell it will be a gorgeous site. It will be called Malcolm X Plaza after the late Black Muslim leader who had a strong civil rights influence on Harlem and rest of the black communities in the world.

The Plaza is setup so the trees and the plants provide a sight line from St. Nicholas Avenue to the intersection of Malcolm X Boulevard, stated Ken Smith, the landscape architect for the plaza. He also said that the patterns on the tiles on the floor of the plaza and the plants follow the Islamic design motifs after Malcolm X 's Islamic beliefs. They were also testing out a bench that they will put in the plaza.

There will a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Malcolm X Plaza on Saturday August 5, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow. For more information, call (212) 590-9512 or (212) 662-4440. It will be a day full of excitement and joyful celebration for the new park which commemorates one of Harlem' s greatest civil rights leaders.
