Running For It All

By Angel Colon and Damian Browne

A young girl's dream was finally realized when she was elected in a landslide victory as Manhattan Borough President. Virginia Fields has taken a step closer to fulfilling her responsibilities. She really feels she can help the borough of Manhattan.

What is a Manhattan Borough President (MBP)? A MBP is someone who tries to help out towards benefits, housing, school supplies, and much more. The job itself is very difficult, you have to serve lots of people and their needs.

Ms. Virginia Fields has had lots of experience on how to run a job like this, as she is currently on the New York City Council. The difference between City Council and MBP is that a City Council person has a small area (in Councilwoman Fields case, the Upper West side and Central Harlem) while a MBP has the entire Borough of Manhattan to represent. As City Council representative, she had a lot on her hands serving NY citizens for many different problems.

Ms. Fields wants to become MBP because she feels someone needs to speak out for all the ages and to help people go towards the future. She is also very concerned about EDUCATION. If she is elected MBP, she would like to improve New York City Public Schools . She wants to help those "low performance schools" with text books, more advanced subjects, better lunches, more teachers, more after school programs, and less children in classrooms. She is also going to work towards getting new playgrounds, schools, business offices, housing, and much more. To get these jobs done, she would use her knowledge of city government.

When asked if the Mayor ship was in sight, she replied "I'm not thinking about the Mayor's job, I'm thinking about the MBP job" But that if the opportunity came knocking she would not be adverse to consider being mayor of the nation's largest city.

Ms. Virginia Fields was born in Burmington, Alabama. She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., at the age of seventeen. Her mother died five years ago. Her mother was sort of her cheerleader and driving force. Her father died when she was twelve years old. She has three sisters and one brother and her family is very supportive of her ideas. Virginia Fields is now fifty one years of age.
