The Institute for Learning Technologies at Teachers
College:
The most enduring relationship has been with the Institute
for Learning Technologies (ILT) at Teachers College, Columbia
University. It was while working there that I came up with
the idea to start HarlemLive (damn ideas)! Within the first
six months, ILT agreed to house the site on their servers
(thus saving at minimum $100/month). They have continued to
house our ever-growing site. They have also provided copying
and mailing services as well as the ability to book rooms
for our use at Teachers College. For over two years (HL years
4-6) they were able to pay me a salary under an ongoing grant.
Although no longer on salary, I still attend their staff meetings
and am considered ILT family. We are included
as one of the projects associated with the Institute and are
listed on their website and were often asked to participate
with the activities of the staff at ILT with schools and CBOs.
• Columbia Graduate Engineering School:
The engineering school has chosen HL along with 9 other community
groups to work with in developing the uses of technology.
They have helped us automate how we track our stories and
designed an interface for the clickable map project.

Bloomberg reporterHarlemLive works with several NYC high schools,
whereas HL is a site where teens serve for internships and
community service and earn school credit. Some of the high
schools are: City As HS, Beacon HS, Vanguard HS, Columbia
Prep HS, HS of Art and Design, Central Park East Secondary
and others. The teens at HL are from all over the city from
about 30 different HS.
