We didn't go to the Nubian village because the people in our group were sick. We weren't scheduled to go though. We were supposed to go to Garb Aswan, which means "West of Aswan", but we changed plans--Jessica and I went shopping at the Bazaar behind the hotel instead.First we made a list of all the people we bought gifts for and the people we needed to get gifts for.I also made a list of the things I intended to get today. I was carrying almost eighty pounds so I thought after today, I would be straight as far as gifts go. The first place we went was the silver shop.

Everyone in the group has been getting good deals. One person got a cartouche for 15 pounds. In Cairo I bought three cartouche's for $60.00. I finally decided to get a cartouche for my brother in the hope that he'll appreciate it. I paid 15 pounds for the cartouche and 25 pounds for the chain. I ended up paying 40 pounds for one cartouche and one chain. Jessica paid 40 pounds for two cartouches and two chains. Now her chains didn't look as good as mine, but it's apparent that she got the better deal.

In retrospect, I could have gotten two of them, but I only wanted one. This is the second time I've been ripped off today. It's my fault though. I have to tell myself that so that I don't get too pissed off at the storeowner. I mean, who am I to expect him to be honest and work for the customers, instead of his greedy self. I tried to go and talk to him and exchange the chains to get a cheaper deal, but he claims he was out of those chains.

This was just another experience to record as a memory for Egypt. On a lighter note, we had a seminar today. The article was about the African Question: "Who is to Blame",run by Claire and Joseph. This was their second seminar. Their first one was on female genital mutilation. Before I go on about their seminar, I have to add a little info about the group. Whether or not the presenters meant it to be, most issues are controversial. We have very intellectual discussions about the issues being presented to us.

These discussions go on for at least an hour and a half. The discussions are so good because people disagree on certain issues and we are all given as much time to express our ideas. The discussion is the most anticipated part of the seminar. I said all that so that it can be understood why Claire and Joseph conducted their seminar the way they did. nned for more than just a discussion.

First, let me explain about our seminars. They start with an icebreaker. That orients everyone to the issue being discussed, and it's a nice way to start the seminar. Anyway, Claire and Joe's icebreaker was a debate: one side argued that the unruly state of many African nations is the fault of Europeans that colonized Africa. This side obviously argued that it's the African nation's fault that it is in its predicament. Personally I enjoyed the debate.

This may be because Omar and I were basically the only people arguing, although Claire just rushed through the framework so that we could get to the discussions. I don't know if it's a result of her rushing, but the discussion wasn't that good. This could be because people were tired, and it was hot, but I don't think so. There actually has to be a presentation so that we'll have something to discuss. It could also be that people didn't read the article. This was not one of the better presentations. There were so many times in the seminar when there was silence, and we were just looking at each other. I think Claire and Joe should have place.
